Owen describes Jevons' paradox: greater efficiency leads to greater consumption, not less. Most current leaders who are concerned about climate change suggest that increasing efficiency is among the most urgent steps we need to take. Are they kidding themselves? Or is Jevons missing something about our current predicament? What advice would you offer Steven Chu, Barack Obama, and John Boehner regarding additional steps would we need to take to prevent efficiency gains from simply producing increases in consumption?
