Nathaniel Stern (’03) won HMC's second Apker Award. Two Apker Awards are awarded annually for outstanding achievement in physics by an undergraduate, one for colleges and one for institutions with graduate programs. The Award was presented at the APS March Meeting, where he spoke on his research with Professors Eckert and Sparks on magnetic spin valves. In the audience was Gwendolyn Bell (’98), HMC’s first Apker Award winner.
NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science and the philosophy of science, and to research-based PhD degrees in science education. They are extremely competitive awards, and we are pleased to report that the HMC class of 2004 had 10 winners, of which 3 were physics majors, and two were double majors including physics. Congratulations one and all!
